Just Released A New JaxDUG Website

Where have I been? My wife asks the same question every night around 8pm. For the past week and a half I have been working on a new site for our .Net User Group. For the past couple of years I've thought that the site needed to be rebranded and now that I am president of the group I am putting it into action. A couple of things contributed to it taking the amount of time it did were...

  1. I am not really a web developer anymore.
  2. Had to jump through some hoops with GoDaddy, where the site is hosted.
  3. A full time job, two kids and a computer jealous wife!

Probably the biggest hoop was .Net 3.5 SP1. What do I mean? Well first I figured that it was already installed on the server at GoDaddy since it had been out since August 2008. Not the case...I could not talk them into it, so that forced me to rewrite the backend from using Entity Framework to LINQ To SQL. Well this worked out because I will be speaking at next month's meeting and it was great practice for the demos I will probably be showing. Second, I would say the learning curve of working with IIS 7.0 and partial trusted virtual directories. The way around this was scaling back my dev. environment's IIS settings and working out the issues locally first.

So I am going to pass out the temporary address, however this site is still in beta and the only functionality currently is this...

  1. The ability to see the current month's presentation and meeting information.
  2. The ability for new members to join, upload a rich bio profile and image.
  3. The ability for members to edit their information and account settings

Speaking At JaxDUG Feb 4, 2009

I will be presenting at next month's JaxDUG meeting and my topic was brewed from a variety of concerns on LINQ To SQL and the release of Entity Framework. Here is the description of the presentation.

"LINQing, Data Access and OR Mapping In .Net 3.5"

There is some buzz going around on these technologies as well as some confusion on which one should be used. As developers it is sometimes hard to keep up with the trend on these topics and this presentation is geared to get you back on track. A couple of months ago .Net 3.5, SP1 was released along with a new way handling LINQ and object relation mapping

Some of the areas covered will be..

  1. Explanation of LINQ
    • different types and how they are used
  2. Building scalable and maintainable data access layers
    • through LINQ
    • through Entity Framework
  3. SOA by exposing data through RESTful services

If you like other developers, need a practical way to build a foundation on these technologies, this presentation is a must.

Matt W. Levels Questions On WF Concerns

I was checking out Jon Flander's blog when I came across this posting. It reminded me of a post I did last month where I responded to some confusions (to stay politically correct) about some feelings towards WF 3.X. Well looks like there was another post by someone which Matt W. makes an exceptional response.
